"I've recently tried a demo version of PenReader. Honestly saying, I ask myself why Microsoft is not including a system like that by standard and why they use that pesky character recognizer insted of PenReader. Writting whole words anywhere on the screen instead of letter by letter on a table that hides more than one third of the screen is surely a great comfort to me. And best of all I can write my Polish letters that no other recognition system can recognise. I was wondering: how could I write these letters if the PenReader wouldn't exists? Microsoft doesn't care, other companies producing character recognition software don't bother themselves about it, luckily Paragon does. Anyway thanks for a great product, I intend to buy it in days."

"I got an e-mail from Paragon Software advertising PenReader. I almost didn't reply to it due to my belief that HWR still had a long way to go. HWR software needs to be accurate, fast, and small. It should not be the largest application on the device! I was soooo pleasantly surprised by PenReader! It was 500KB (small)! It is very accurate on discrete characters. It has all of the essential features required by HWR. It has extensive support of languages. It allows you to write in any of 28 languages without changing any settings in the program. You just begin writing in the other language. HWR recognition, ability to write from any of the four screen orientations, sufficient gestures to allow for complete HWR entry into any application, a handwriting calculator, and SPEED! SPEED! SPEED!
All HWR recognition happened within a second or so after I quit writing. The amount of text written didn't seem to affect HWR recognition at all. The detection of the end of writing is less than a second. All of this speed leads to a quite enjoyable experience.

The handwriting calculator will recognize the text of an equation, convert it to text, calculate the answer, and add it to the equation. This would be very good for anyone who may be traveling and needs a quick way to do monetary conversions, sales taxes, etc. It just takes forever to open up that calculator doesn't it?

Finally I found that PenReader is the only HWR system that is fully compatible with my new device - HP Jornada 720.

"I downloaded this program after Dale Coffing's review. I have had problems with all the simular programs. I am lefthanded and write normally NOT continuous with a slight slant (opposite righthanded people) and found that this program was the best I have seen so far."

Arne Skaanes

"I opted for PenReader for the following reasons:

  • It recognizes as much my running writing as the printing.
  • I didn't have learn how to write complicated or artificial patterns again, neither to invest long hours of training. I only had to install it and to begin to use it.
  • I can write in the four possible positions in that I can take my PDA, very useful if I should take notes in situations where there is not time of becoming comfortable to write.
  • I can carry out equations without to open the calculator or to alternate between the use of the keyboard and the writing recognition: all that I should make is to write the equation and... Voila! Penreader shows me the result.
  • I can choose up to three context languages to use PenReader, very useful if I should write in Spanish and English in alternate form. Up to three languages among 28 possible.
  • It is a product that is not only very potent and exact, but rather Spanish recognizes without problems neither false our interpretations orthographic accents, the "problematic" "T" neither the diereses.
Excessively say it that it occupies very little space in memory and their speed doesn't make slow the operation of my device. Frankly it is a noble and very well achieved product."

"I've been using PenReader for a few days and I really think this an excellent piece of software. It is so much better than MS Transcriber that after a couple of minutes testing it I decided to buy it. The interpretation of extended latin characters, specifically the ones used in Portuguese is done with a very high accuracy! I can't wait for the cursive version for Portuguese."

Rui Ribeiro

"As a Hungarian user myself I've got to use a lot of accented characters, so Transcriber is not an option for me. That's why I checked PenReader.
To be frank I've uninstalled it after a day at the first run. But later I gave it a second try, and worth it. First you can't evaluate a handwriting recognition software in a day. You have to get used to each other. The software has to learn your writing and you have to learn the quirks of the software. After using it for a couple of days the hit ratio improved dramatically. (And don't forget you can have accented chars!!!)

And this is just the small part of it. I've gathered my comments, and emailed to the company, who proved to be really helpful (big cheers to Michael Fadeev! ;-) ). It is good to see a company that actually cares about the entity, called "customer". As a conclusion: If you are writing english only, then Transcriber is still better, but moving to national characters PenReader rules the scene. :-) (although I can hardly wait cursive support... that'd be a real hit!)"

"I just downloaded the demo of Penreader 2.04 for Windows 98 Desktop. I don't have a pen or tablet so I used the mouse. I tested writing out a short memo in notepad. My accuracy was probably around 80-85% just starting out. After closely examining how letters should be drawn my accuracy increased to the high 90's.
I must say that recognition is fairly accurate and would have been improved with a pen...New users to this software, I feel will find it very easy and fast to input data into their PDAs.

It looks promising from the limited demo I used on a desktop computer with a mouse.

Again, it's software I would recommend."

Greg Silver

"I am happy with the programs ability to recognize handwriting anywhere on the screen ... It is looking good, and the fact that PenReader supports so may alphabets should make up for any shortcomings it may have. I am impressed thus far."
